The world's most important endurance motor race, run since 1923 over the 13.6km Circuit de la Sarthe, which mixes a permanent circuit with public roads closed for the week. Cars run flat out for 24 hours through daylight, dusk, night and dawn, and hundreds of thousands of fans camp inside the circuit to watch it. The scale is the point: a moving city of tents, campfires and floodlights around a track you can walk for hours without repeating yourself.

A general admission week ticket runs roughly EUR 90 - 170 and covers the public enclosures and infield, numbered grandstand seats start around EUR 200, and hospitality packages run into the thousands. Fully open to the public. On-site campsites are sold with the ticket and are the classic way to do it; Le Mans hotels are booked out a year in advance.

Insider tip

Skip the main straight and walk out to the Porsche Curves or Tertre Rouge at around 2am - the cars are at their most spectacular in the dark, the crowds have thinned, and general admission tickets cover both.
