Epsom Derby, Epsom, United Kingdom, Jun 4 - 5, 2027

The oldest and most prestigious of Britain's five flat Classics, run over a mile and a half of switchbacking, cambered Epsom Downs turf since 1780, with the Oaks on Friday and the Derby on Saturday afternoon. The course itself is the test: a steep climb, a sharp left-hand descent at Tattenham Corner, then a straight that throws horses off balance. It is also the most democratic big day in British racing, with the free infield packed with families and funfair rides while morning dress fills the grandstand.

Insider tip

The centre of the course - the Hill - is genuinely free and always has been; bring a picnic, arrive before midday for a spot near the winning post side, and you get the same race the royal box gets for nothing.
