Three consecutive February Sundays of flat racing, trotting and skijoring staged on the frozen Lake St. Moritz, a fixture since 1907. Thousands stand on the ice while thoroughbreds throw up rooster tails of snow along the marked course. Family days on the preceding Saturdays open the same course to a more relaxed crowd.

How to attend

General entry tickets are sold on the official White Turf site from around November and cost roughly 20 to 40 euros, covering access to the lake, the standing rail and the food village. Grandstand seats and hospitality tents start in the low hundreds and are the ones that disappear. There is no ballot or membership requirement, so the real constraint is finding a hotel bed rather than a ticket.

Insider tip

Skijoring, where riders are towed behind galloping thoroughbreds on skis, runs nowhere else in the world and is the centrepiece of the third Sunday - pick that weekend if you can only make one.
