Sunfest Week (Solfestuka) takes place Mar 1 - 14, 2027 (the sun-return ceremony is on Mar 8) in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway. A near two-week festival marking the sun's return to Svalbard after four months of polar night, culminating on 8 March when the first rays reach the steps of the old hospital and the town gathers to watch. The programme around it takes in concerts, sports, lectures, films and communal meals. It is one of the Arctic's most sincere seasonal rituals and costs nothing to be part of.

How to attend
Most Solfestuka events are free and open to everyone - for the 8 March ceremony you simply turn up at the old hospital steps. Ticketed concerts are sold locally and listed via Visit Svalbard, generally EUR 20 - 50. There is no ballot or membership. Fly to Longyearbyen via Oslo or Tromso and book accommodation early, since the same weeks are prime snowmobile-touring season.
Most of Solfestuka is free and the 8 March sun-return ceremony needs no ticket at all - you just turn up at the old hospital steps, and the handful of paid concerts are sold locally in Longyearbyen once the programme appears.
Insider tip
Get to the old hospital steps at least half an hour early on 8 March - the whole town turns out, schoolchildren sing, and the actual moment the light hits lasts only a few minutes.
