Rørosmartnan (Røros Winter Market), Røros, Norway, Feb 16 - 20, 2027 (always the second-to-last Tuesday of February through Saturday)

A market first held in 1854 in the UNESCO-listed copper-mining town of Roros, opened by a procession of horse-drawn sleighs that have travelled for two weeks to get there. Around 250 stalls line streets of 1700s timber houses selling local food, hides, wool and craft, in cold that regularly bottoms out below -20C. Living heritage rather than reenactment, and the fairytale setting is the real draw.

How to attend

The street market and the Tuesday sleigh procession are free and open to all. Concerts, the church programme and some indoor events are ticketed at roughly EUR 20 - 50 through rorosmartnan.no once the programme is published in the new year. Take the train straight into Roros, which drops you in the middle of the market. Book lodging months ahead; day-tripping from Trondheim is possible but you miss the evening.

The market itself is free to walk into and the organiser states that most concert tickets are sold at the door, so there is no single booking page to link to.

Insider tip

Be on Bergmannsgata at noon on the Tuesday for the opening - eighty-plus horse-drawn sleighs come down the hill after a two-week journey, and it is over in about twenty minutes.
