Jokkmokk Winter Market (Jokkmokks marknad)
Jokkmokk Winter Market (Jokkmokks marknad) takes place Feb 4 - 6, 2027 (422nd market, always the first Thu - Sat of February) in Jokkmokk, Sweden. The dress code is Serious Arctic winter gear: insulated boots with room for thick socks, thermal base layers, down parka, hat and mittens. Temperatures regularly sit below -20C and you will be outdoors for hours. Typical cost ranges from 400 to 1200 EUR per person.

Held every first weekend of February since 1605, this is one of Europe's oldest continuously running indigenous gatherings and the annual meeting point of Sami Sweden. Reindeer caravans come down the street, duodji craftspeople sell knives, silver and reindeer-hide work, and joik carries between the stalls. Tens of thousands of people crowd a town of a few thousand in temperatures that can hit -30C.

How to attend
The open-air market is free to walk into and no ticket exists - stalls run roughly 10:00 to 18:00 Thursday to Saturday. Ticketed extras (concerts, the Ajtte museum programme, guided Sami cultural evenings) are sold locally and via jokkmokksmarknad.se. The hard part is logistics rather than access: fly to Lulea, then drive or take the bus, and lock in lodging around a year ahead. Many visitors stay in Gallivare, Boden or Alvsbyn and drive in for the day.
The open-air market is free to walk into and no ticket exists; only the concerts and museum events are separately ticketed, and those are sold locally nearer the time.
Insider tip
Come the day before opening for the reindeer caravan arriving into town - it is the most photographed moment of the week and far less crowded than the Saturday market peak.
