How to attend

Free to watch, with no tickets involved. Base yourself in Alta for the ceremonial start and the finish festivities - the city-centre start is the easiest place to see every team up close. Committed fans follow to accessible checkpoints by car or on organised spectator tours. Exact dates are published on finnmarkslopet.no roughly a year ahead, and musher registration opens in mid-August. Book Alta beds early.

The race is free to watch with no tickets at all - only mushers register, and spectators simply turn up for the Alta start and finish.

Insider tip

The ceremonial start in Alta is the spectacle, but the checkpoints are the story - drive out to one and watch teams come in at three in the morning, when mushers are bedding down dogs before they sleep themselves.
