Oaxaca's great Indigenous cultural festival, where delegations from the state's eight regions perform traditional dance, music and dress in the hillside Cerro del Fortin amphitheatre on two successive Mondays each July. It is one of Mexico's richest displays of living folk heritage, spilling into parades, food fairs and mezcal tastings across the city for two weeks.

How to attend
Premium lower seating (Palco A/B, roughly 500 - 1,100 MXN) is sold in advance through the state tourism office; the upper tiers are free but fill before sunrise. A huge share of the festival - parades, satellite performances, craft and food fairs - is free citywide. Book Oaxaca lodging by late spring.
Paid Palco seats are sold by the Oaxaca state government only a few months before the July dates and no 2027 sales page exists yet; the upper tiers and most citywide events are free.
Insider tip
The free upper tiers are excellent if you queue from dawn, and the free Convite parades, mezcal fairs and village Guelaguetzas around the city often outshine the ticketed show itself.
