Seven days of racing at Ballybrit that function as Ireland's biggest annual social gathering, with the Galway Plate on Wednesday and Ladies Day on Thursday as the marquee occasions. Racing is late-afternoon and evening, so the whole city runs on festival time for a week. The atmosphere is more carnival than championship: music, food stalls, serious hats and a crowd that treats attendance as a national duty.

How to attend
Buy through galwayraces.com. General admission is affordable, typically the equivalent of EUR 25 - 35 per day, with reserved seating and hospitality marquees far higher. Fully open to the public with no ballot. Shuttle buses run continuously from Eyre Square in the city centre to Ballybrit on race days.
Insider tip
Racing starts late afternoon and runs into the evening, so treat the day as a night out - the real festival happens in Galway's pubs after the last race, and the shuttle buses run both ways well into the night.
