Norwegian Derby (Norsk Derby), Oslo, Norway, Aug 23, 2026 (first race 12:30)

Norway's premier thoroughbred classic, run one Sunday in late August at Ovrevoll, the country's only gallop racecourse, in leafy Baerum just outside Oslo. The programme mixes the Derby with a supporting card that draws Scandinavian runners, and the crowd treats it as a picnic-and-betting day out rather than a formal occasion. It is small, friendly and cheap by the standards of European classic days, which is exactly its appeal.

Insider tip

Ovrevoll is set in woodland in Baerum and is genuinely small - stand at the rail by the paddock and you will be closer to the horses than at any major European racecourse.
