The opening leg of Argentina's polo Triple Crown, played on the tree-lined grounds of the Tortugas Country Club north of Buenos Aires. The same 40-goal teams that will contest Palermo in December start their campaign here, but on club fields with a fraction of the crowd, so you can stand at the boards and hear the players calling to each other. It is the connoisseur's stop on the Argentine polo season.

How to attend
Tickets are sold via the Asociacion Argentina de Polo at aapolo.com and are cheaper than Palermo, though the final draws a proper crowd. Open to the public. Tortugas Country Club is in Tortuguitas, roughly 40 km north of the city, and public transport is impractical - drive, take a taxi or arrange a transfer, and agree the return trip in advance. Check the AAP calendar for confirmed fixture dates, which are published a few months out.
Insider tip
Tortugas is where the season's teams and pony strings are still being sorted out, so you often see better polo per peso than at Palermo, with room to stand at the boards rather than in a stand.
