Tjorn Runt

One of Scandinavia's biggest single-day regattas: a roughly 28-nautical-mile lap of the island of Tjorn on Sweden's west coast north of Gothenburg, drawing around a thousand boats. The fleet is overwhelmingly amateur and family crews, and the granite-skerry villages along the route turn the day into a coastal festival. It is a purely local tradition that happens to be enormous.

How to attend
Free to watch from the bridges, headlands and harbour villages around Tjorn, with Skarhamn, Ronnang and Stenungsund the natural bases. Boat entry runs through Stenungsunds Segelsallskap and is deliberately open to cruising and family crews rather than only racers, at modest entry fees. Combine it with a few days on the Bohuslan coast, which is at its best in mid-August.
