Skagen Race, Marstrand, Sweden, Mid-May 2027 (Ascension weekend; staggered starts from Marstrand and Norwegian ports)

A Scandinavian offshore classic that sends fleets from Swedish and Norwegian ports across the Kattegat and Skagerrak to round the northern tip of Denmark at Skagen. It is timed to the Ascension holiday weekend and is a rite of passage for Nordic offshore crews, who take on genuinely cold open water in spring. Marstrand, the fortress sailing town on the Swedish west coast, is the traditional base, though the Norwegian starts have their own organisation and dates.

How to attend

The Marstrand start is free to watch from the town waterfront and the Carlsten fortress, reached by a short passenger ferry. Competing means entering a boat through the organising clubs via manage2sail, with offshore safety equipment and experienced crew expected given the conditions. Crew berths are found through Swedish and Norwegian west-coast sailing clubs rather than any public listing, so start asking well before the spring.

The Marstrand start is free to watch from the town waterfront and Carlsten fortress, so no ticket exists; entry is by boat through the organising clubs via manage2sail and crew berths are found informally through west-coast sailing clubs.

Insider tip

Starts are staggered from several Scandinavian ports rather than one line, so check which start you are actually watching - the Marstrand one, under the Carlsten fortress, is the photogenic option.
