A week of warm-water racing among the limestone islands of the Langkawi archipelago in the Andaman Sea, hosted by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club. The fleet mixes serious Asian circuit racers with cruising boats that have wintered in Southeast Asia, and the January dry season delivers reliably good conditions. It is one of the friendliest fixtures on the Asian calendar, more holiday than campaign.

How to attend
Spectating is free from the yacht club and the Kuah waterfront, though the racing is best seen from a chartered boat. Boat entries and crew listings go through langkawiregatta.com, usually opening a couple of months ahead, and the regatta actively welcomes cruising crews rather than only professionals. Langkawi is a duty-free island, which explains a good deal about how the social side runs.
Spectating from the yacht club and the Kuah waterfront is free with no ticket; the registration form on the official site is for boats and crew entering the racing, not for visitors.
Insider tip
The island courses weave between limestone karsts, so hire a longtail or get onto a support boat for a morning - from the Kuah waterfront you see very little of the actual racing.
