Queenstown Winter Festival
Queenstown Winter Festival takes place Jun 2027, dates to be confirmed (the 2026 edition ran Jun 18 - 21; usually four days in the second half of June) in Queenstown, New Zealand. The dress code is Warm casual layers, waterproof jacket, hat and gloves for cold lakeside nights; the Mardi Gras and gala nights are where people dress up. Typical cost ranges from 500 to 1600 EUR per person.

The Southern Hemisphere's largest winter festival, opening New Zealand's ski season with fireworks over Lake Wakatipu, a street carnival, comedy nights and on-mountain events. Most of the street and lakefront programme is free, and the town centre closes to traffic for it. The crowd is a genuine mix of locals and international snow travellers rather than a tourist-only affair.

How to attend
Most of the festival is free and outdoors: the opening street party, the fireworks over Lake Wakatipu and the on-mountain events are open to anyone in Queenstown. Ticketed comedy nights, the Mardi Gras and gala events were previously sold through the festival's own site, which no longer exists, so watch local Queenstown listings for the programme instead.
The festival has no working official site and no 2027 programme or ticket sale has been announced. The street party and fireworks have always been free to watch.
Insider tip
The opening-night fireworks over Lake Wakatipu are free, and the view from the Queenstown Gardens peninsula is far better than fighting for space on the packed waterfront.
