The world's largest amateur ski race, dropping roughly 2,000 vertical metres from the Schilthorn area toward Lauterbrunnen for a field of around 1,800. Founded by the British Kandahar Ski Club in 1928, it has kept a clubby heritage feel that no modern event can manufacture. Places are capped and drawn by ballot after the September deadline, while spectating in car-free Murren costs nothing.

How to attend
Register online at inferno-muerren.ch: the 2027 portal opens Jun 1, 2026 and closes Sep 15, 2026. Fields are capped at roughly 1,850 for the downhill and 500 for the combination, prior medal finishers hold guaranteed places and everyone else goes into a ballot. Entrants must be born in 2009 or earlier. Spectating is free and open to anyone who rides the cable car and mountain train up to Murren.
Insider tip
The race is decided as much on the long flat schuss down toward Lauterbrunnen as on the steep top section, so waxing and a disciplined tuck matter more than raw nerve.
