Twice a year, on Feb 22 and Oct 22, the rising sun aligns to pierce 60 metres into Ramses II's rock temple and illuminate the seated gods of the inner sanctuary - an ancient feat of solar engineering. Crowds gather before dawn for the few golden minutes, followed by Nubian music and dance outside. Access is via a standard temple ticket on a spectacular day.

How to attend
Buy a normal temple entry ticket at Abu Simbel and arrive very early - gates open around 5am and sanctuary space is limited on festival mornings. Most visitors come on an organized tour or convoy from Aswan (about 3.5 hours) or the short EgyptAir hop; book transport and rooms well ahead for the two alignment dates.
Entry is a standard Abu Simbel temple ticket bought at the gate on the morning; the Egyptian antiquities ministry does not sell it online.
Insider tip
Sleep in Abu Simbel itself the night before - you will beat the Aswan convoys to the gate and stand near the sanctuary when the sun enters.
