King's Cup Reindeer Race (Porokuninkuusajot), Inari, Finland, Late Mar - early Apr 2027 (season finale; the host village rotates around Finnish Lapland)

Finland's reindeer-racing circuit ends in a season finale where competitors on skis are towed at full gallop behind a reindeer across a frozen lake, and the champion is crowned reindeer king. Inari, the centre of Finnish Sami culture, is a frequent host. It is loud, fast, deeply local and almost unknown outside Finland, with betting stalls and grilled sausage on the ice.

How to attend

Spectating on the lakeside is free or costs a token entry of a few euros; there is no advance ticketing. The catch is confirming where and when - the Finnish Reindeer Herders' Association (paliskunnat.fi) publishes the circuit calendar and the finale venue in mid-winter, and it is announced in Finnish first. Fly to Ivalo and drive. Ask your hotel to check the date for you if you do not read Finnish.

There is no advance ticket and no booking page anywhere - spectating on the lake ice is free or a token fee at the gate, and the host village for the finale is only announced in mid-winter, in Finnish.

Insider tip

Stand near the finish rather than the start - reindeer are unpredictable off the line and the real drama is watching skiers try to stay upright over the last hundred metres.
