Hurtigruten's coastal service has carried mail, freight and passengers along Norway's western seaboard since 1893, calling at 34 ports between Bergen and Kirkenes. The northbound leg takes about six days and the full round trip eleven to twelve, threading fjords, crossing the Arctic Circle and running under the midnight sun in high summer. It is working transport as much as a cruise, so the ship docks at odd hours in small towns and locals board alongside you with their shopping.

How to attend
Book direct at hurtigruten.com or through a Norway specialist; fares are cabin-inclusive with meals and vary hugely by season and cabin grade. Summer sailings open roughly 12 to 18 months ahead and the cheapest inside cabins go first. Port-to-port tickets for single legs are sold far more cheaply and can be bought close to departure, which is a good way to sample the route without committing to the full voyage. Note that the historic coastal route is now shared between Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages, so check which operator runs your date.
Insider tip
If time is short, sail northbound Bergen to Kirkenes only and fly home - the northbound schedule times the most scenic ports for daylight and costs roughly half the round trip.
