Japan's largest and most famous traditional dance festival, held during Obon, when teams of dancers (ren) parade through Tokushima in synchronised troupes to shamisen, drums and flutes. Over a million spectators pack the small city for four nights. The chant 'the dancers are fools, the watchers are fools - so why not dance?' captures its infectious spirit.
